Education in Benin: Credentials and Institutions In and Out of the Formal Education System

Session Information

The educational system of Benin has changed over the last 20 years as a result of reforms adopted to align with the Licence-Master-Doctorat (LMD) model of the Bologna Accord in the European Union. However, we continue to receive educational records for students who graduated before the LMD structure was implemented, so it is important to understand the historical system as well. Higher education recognition in Benin is also multifaceted. Like many Francophone countries, Établissements d'Enseignement Supérieur Privés/EPES (private higher education institutions) must have their individual programs recognized by the national or regional accrediting authorities to be considered comparable to programs offered at national/public universities. Further complicating this is the proliferation of HEIs in Benin offering English-speaking, 3- and 4-year Bachelor programs, primarily marketed towards Nigerian students whose education system differs vastly from the educational system of Benin. This session will add to the helpful information already shared at TAICEP 2021 by further expounding on the recognition lists, sample credentials, and discussion about English-speaking programs.
